July is a month of celebration for our country, Pennsylvania, the Upper Perkiomen Valley, and The Open Link.
This year, the United States marks 250 years of independence, a milestone that reflects the perseverance, resilience, and determination of the American people. Pennsylvania played a pivotal role in our nation's founding, from Philadelphia serving as the first capital to the defining moments in Gettysburg that helped preserve our Union. Here in the Upper Perkiomen Valley, our own history is rooted in the independent spirit of the early Pennsylvania German settlers, whose hard work, generosity, and commitment to community continue to shape who we are today.
The Open Link is proud to be part of that tradition. For more than five decades, we have helped neighbors in need so our community can remain strong, healthy, and connected. July also marks the beginning of our new fiscal year, a time to reflect on what we've accomplished and look ahead to how we can best serve the community in the coming year.
One of the ways we're making a difference this summer is through our Summer Kids Meal Program. Four days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday) for ten weeks, The Open Link's van travels throughout the Valley delivering grab-and-go meal bags containing two breakfasts and two lunches for local children. While this program has always met an important need, this summer demand has reached an all-time high, with a record average of 200 meal bags distributed each day.
Our work doesn't stop there. Every day, we help our neighbors move from beyond simply getting by toward greater stability and independence through emergency rent and utility assistance, adult education classes and testing, employment counseling, transportation services, Meals on Wheels, and many other programs. These services strengthen individuals, families, and our entire Valley community.
Our Senior Center also plays an essential role in helping older adults remain active, engaged, and independent. Through daily community lunches, fitness classes, educational presentations, and enjoyable activities like bingo and trivia, the Center fosters meaningful connections and reminds our older neighbors that they are valued members of our community.
At the heart of everything The Open Link accomplishes is you, our supporters. Your generosity of time, talent, and financial support makes this work possible. Because you believe in a community where neighbors care for one another, families have opportunities to succeed, and older adults can age with dignity, the Upper Perkiomen Valley continues to thrive.
People often say one of the things that stands out most when they visit the United States is how Americans come together to help one another in times of need. I believe the Upper Perkiomen Valley embodies that spirit every day. As we celebrate our nation's 250th anniversary, I'mreminded that the strength of our country begins in communities like ours, where compassion, service, and neighbor helping neighbor remain at the heart of who we are.
Happy Independence Day, and happy 250th anniversary to our nation!
